Dark Souls Beginner Guide: Everything I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Died 400 Times

Boss fight strategy

Here’s a fun stat for you — the average Dark Souls player dies over 100 times on their first playthrough. I blew past that number before I even reached the second boss. Honestly, Dark Souls is one of those games that will chew you up and spit you out if you go in blind. But here’s the thing — it doesn’t have to be that brutal!

I’ve been playing FromSoftware games for years now, and I genuinely believe Dark Souls is one of the greatest action RPGs ever made. The problem is, the game explains almost nothing. So I’m gonna share everything I learned the hard way so you don’t have to suffer quite as much as I did.

Picking Your Starting Class Actually Matters

When I first booted up Dark Souls, I picked the Deprived class because I thought it sounded cool. Big mistake. Starting at level one with no real gear made the opening hours absolutely miserable.

For beginners, I’d strongly recommend going with the Knight or Pyromancer. The Knight starts with solid armor and a decent shield, which gives you a huge safety net while you’re learning the combat system. The Pyromancer is amazing too because pyromancy doesn’t require stat investment early on — it just scales with your flame upgrade.

Don’t overthink your class selection too much though. Every class can eventually become anything. It’s really just about those first few hours.

Stop Button Mashing — Seriously

This was my biggest problem for the longest time. I came from hack-and-slash games where you could just spam attack and win. Dark Souls punishes that so hard.

Every action in this game costs stamina. Swinging your sword, blocking, rolling — all of it drains that green bar. If you mash R1 five times and your stamina runs out, you’re standing there like a sitting duck while some undead warrior absolutely wrecks you. I learned this lesson fighting the Taurus Demon when I got greedy with one more hit and got flattened off the bridge.

The golden rule? Attack once or twice, then back off. Watch your enemy’s patterns. Patience is literally the most powerful weapon in Dark Souls.

Level Up Your Vigor First

I know it’s tempting to pump points into strength or dexterity so you can wield cool weapons. But survivability comes first. Getting your Vigor (or Vitality, depending on the game version) up to at least 20 early on makes a massive difference.

After that, put enough points into your primary damage stat to meet weapon requirements. Then go back to Vigor. I wasted so many souls early on spreading my stats thin across everything, and my character ended up being mediocre at literally everything. Don’t be like me.

Explore Everything, But Know When to Turn Back

Dark Souls has this open-world design that’s kinda sneaky. You can technically go to the New Londo Ruins or the Catacombs right from the start. But just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

If enemies are killing you in one or two hits, you’re probably in the wrong area. The intended early path goes from Firelink Shrine up to the Undead Burg. I spent two hours getting destroyed by skeletons in the Catacombs before realizing I was going the completely wrong direction. That frustration was something else.

However, exploration is rewarded beautifully in this game. Hidden bonfires, secret items, and shortcuts are everywhere. Just be smart about it.

Don’t Hoard Your Souls

Souls are your currency and your experience points, and you drop them all when you die. This creates so much anxiety. But here’s what took me way too long to accept — souls are renewable. Enemies respawn every time you rest at a bonfire.

If you’ve got enough souls to level up, go level up. Don’t walk around with 10,000 souls thinking you’ll grab just a few more. That’s exactly when you’ll fall off a cliff or walk into an ambush. Trust me on this one.

Character build guide

Look, Dark Souls is tough but it’s also incredibly fair once you understand its rules. Every death teaches you something. Every boss that seems impossible eventually clicks, and that feeling of triumph is honestly unmatched in gaming.

Take these tips, adapt them to your own playstyle, and don’t be afraid to summon help when a boss has you stuck. There’s no shame in co-op — the game literally built it in for a reason.
